Return to India

I arrived in the state of Kerala early Sunday morning. The Sisters met me at the airport and we drove through the streets at lightening speed back to their place. All along the road men stood beside makeshift tables that held jars of freshly-squeezed sugar cane juice. Using a simple mechanical juicer that looked like the insides of a truck engine, they fed five-foot poles of fresh-cut sugar cane into one end of the machine and the juice poured out the other.

After a restful day I was met this morning by the students singing outside in an all school assembly.

I spent the morning visiting teachers in their classrooms and talking to students.

At mid-morning I came across a math class with no teacher. The teacher had gone home early not feeling well. The students seemed quite able to entertain themselves.

The day ended a little early so that students could practice basketball in preparation for Sports Day, which will take place in a week.

Sister and a teacher are out on the court!

The next best thing to basketball shoes...bare feet!

    3. When I am traveling and visiting schools in other parts of the world I feel like I am really living. It is fascinating how many of the things we do, the things that are important to us are the same no matter where we are. The children of this school in India are studying, thinking about the future and enjoying their daily life similarly to students I know in the U.S. and other places.

    1. Hi Chuck. Football here means soccer. They all play and love the game. As you saw in my posts, there is a soccer tournament going on at the school right now. Each afternoon, the school ends a little early so that a couple games can be played leading up to the final.

    1. I don't know that I can answer that question. I will try to find out. But Indian women and girls do have absolutely beautiful hair. They apply coconut oil to make it shiny. During school hours they are required to keep it in braids or a pony tail.

    1. Hey Destinie - I will be back in the classroom on Tuesday. I am on my way home now and am writing to you from the airport in Dubai. I have just listened to the call for evening prayer - a beautiful song played over the loud speaker to call the Muslim community to evening prayers. There are prayer rooms throughout the airport, separate for men and women. It is dusk and the lights of the city of Dubai can be seen out the airport windows.
